Esteve Fernández

Director of the Tobacco Control Unit of the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) and Biomedical Research Institute of Bellvitge (IDIBELL) in Barcelona. Dr. Fernandez is Associate Professor of epidemiology and public health at the School of Medicine (Campus of Bellvitge, Universitat de Barcelona, Spain). He is the Director of the Catalan Network of Smoke-free Hospitals, Chair of the Global Network of Tobacco-free Health Care Services. Dr. Fernández serves as Vice President (President-elect) of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (Sociedad Española de Epidemiología)

He received his MD from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, in 1990. He was a research fellow in training (09/1990-09/1994) at the Clinical and Molecular Epidemiology of Cancer Research Unit (Municipal Institute for Medical Research), and obtained the Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctoral (PhD) degrees (Public Health programme, Autonomous University of Barcelona, 07/1995). After a research stay in Milan, Italy, at the Laboratory of General Epidemiology of the “Mario Negri” Institute (09/1994-10/1995), he joined the School of Public Health of Catalonia in Barcelona until its closing (scientist and academic coordinator, 11/1995-12/2000). He has also served as Assistant Professor at the Universitat de Barcelona (09/1997-09/2005) and at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (09/2005-09/2008).

Dr. Fernandez’s main areas of research include cancer epidemiology, with special focus on tobacco smoking, the epidemiology of other risk factors related to cancer, and the monitoring of cancer incidence and mortality trends. He is interested in socioeconomic and gender determinants of health, with focus on cancer and smoking, in methodological issues and the teaching of epidemiologic methods, and in journalology and scientific writing/editing. He has written more than 150 papers in peer reviewed journals. He has been Editor-in-Chief (2004-2010) and Associate Editor (1999-2004) of Gaceta Sanitaria (the Journal of the Spanish Society of Public Health), and currently he serves as reviewer for other international journals in these areas.
