Esteve Fernández Head of the Tobacco Research Unit at the Cancer Prevention and Control
Department of the Catalan Institute
of Oncology in Barcelona, Assistant Professor of epidemiology and
co-Coordinator of the Master of Public
Health (Department of Experimental and
Health Sciences, Pompeu Fabra University
(Barcelona). He received his MD from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Dr.
Fernandez’s main areas of research include cancer epidemiology, with
special focus on tobacco smoking, the epidemiology of other risk factors
related to cancer, and the monitoring of cancer incidence and mortality
trends. He is interested in socioeconomic and gender determinants of health,
with focus on cancer and smoking, in methodological issues and the teaching
of epidemiologic methods, and in journalology and scientific writing/editing.
He is also the Coordinator of the Catalan
Network of Smoke-free Hospitals. He has written more
than 100 papers in peer reviewed journals. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Gaceta Sanitaria (Journal of the Spanish
Society of Public Health) and serves as reviewer for other international
